This is a great size for kids and gets them engaged in reading. I like that you can change the brightness and now I can read to my kids at bedtime without a light on in their bedrooms. The pages turn faster than my dry fingers can turn the pages of a paper book, and my place in the book is saved without me having to fiddle with bookmarks that fall out of regular books. The text is black & white which probably helps the battery life. The lighting and B&W is easy on the eyes. I love that the only thing they can use their Kindles for is reading. We allow our boys to read on their Kindles when they can’t fall asleep. Great gift for kids, especially when their parents don’t want them on technology 24/7. We don’t count reading on the Kindle Paperwhite towards their screen time limits. Read away, little ones!

my daughter asked Santa for a Kindle and he delivered and she has not put it down since we got it. She’s already read two chapter books and one picture book that was Minnie mouse. She is loving it and has gotten her really excited about reading every day. it’s like we it’s compact the battery life is amazing. She has read four books on it two of which were chapter and has not had to charge it yet. The screen is great. We can change the brightness the font size and it’s just lightweight. She can carry it wherever we’ve gone on Christmas break.

After receiving the Kindle Paperwrite on Christmas Day my reluctant reader has not put it down. She loves it and I love that she is interested in reading more. Easy to use, she can pick books, read in the car, and it’s light weight. The quality is top notch and the colorful case is perfect for her personality.

Absolutely perfect for kids that love to read! No complaints. Works great, long battery life and easy for the kids to use. Love that it does not give internet access. But a pair of Bluetooth headphones and audiobooks work too!

Our 10 year old and 6 year old both got one for Christmas. They both already have iPads and we’re trying to ensure they focus on just reading, which is far easier when that’s all the Kindle does. My older child just cannot put the Kindle down and is a voracious reader. The younger child is getting there, too. The device itself is super simple and does its job without drama. Takes the kids some time to get used to it being slower than reading on a iPad, but once they understand, it’s no big deal. The e-ink display is rich and the backlight does a great job adjusting to the ambient light. Parental timing controls are decent. Wish the full power off process was clearer and more intuitive - device does not need to stand by forever. I took one star off because the process of kids downloading public library ebooks is excessively complicated. Without describing the process in detail, I will just note that it’s very simple on iPads. Both processes start with the Libbey app, but things go sideways once books have to transfer to the Kindle ecosystem, mainly because minor children don’t have their own Amazon account. And I don’t think Amazon really minds the complexity because it makes the kids Kindle Unlimited subscription super attractive because *that* is dead simple, as one would expect. (Note that it’s a lot easier for adults to use Kindles with library ebooks because it’s the adult’s Amazon account.)

Upgraded from my kindle basic and it is even more amazing than I thought it would be! A bigger screen but not too big. It's comparable to about the size of a book. I love that it has soft lighting features. It's easy to navigate and makes reading so convenient and enjoyable. This one came with a free warranty which is a plus! If you use as an adult kindle and don't add the kids function you will still get ads! Just an FYI. I don't find ads as an inconvenience personally. They're literally only there for a second until you swipe. The case that came with it was a good quality and colorful! I actually don't mind it and am not in a hurry to switch it.

It is a struggle to get my 9 year old grandson to read, but not anymore! He discovered that he can hold down on an unfamiliar word and a dictionary pops up. He is currently reading the first Harry Potter book and is loving the details that aren't in the movie that he's seen many times. He also like being able to read with the lights off. It is small and compact. Very easy to travel with. The only difficulty we had is changing the parental settings when we were at a hotel. Neither of our kindles would connect to the hotel internet. I even had IT help from hotel. I'm not sure why, but if you travel, set up the kindle in advance. Otherwise, it's a wonderful gift for a young person.

Picked this up for my 6yo (just getting into reading) and after I figured out panel view for his favorite comic, he's super into his Kindle. For the uninitiated, panel view enabled books let you double tap into portions of a full page with multiple panels and zoom into one panel at a time. Makes it much easier to read the text and appreciate the imagery. The Kindle will remember you activated panel view and show all subsequent pages that way. Double tap once more to deactivate panel view and go back to regular page view. Toss in the form factor, warm light and long battery, I'm a happy papa. Only suggestion would be to include a case that lets you prop the phone on its own without having to hold it (or as a upgrade option).
