honestly, this thing rules. bought it so that I could play the new Hoyoverse game Zenless Zone Zero on the go, and while it is great for that, i also discovered that this thing offers quite a bit more. call of duty mobile is suprisingly feature rich, with modes and responsiveness good enough to be fun in the same way normal cod multiplayer is on console. the solo leveling mobile game is also really good, its another hack and slash like zzz that really benefits from having a physical controller as opposed to the default touch controls. there are also the other two hoyoverse games to play, and more substatial games on the horizon like a mobile version of siege. there are even mobile app versions of gamecube, psp, and other older console emulators for playing classics from years past on the fly. if you're really clever, im sure you can even rig it up to play modern switch games. you can also game stream from your ps5, xbox, or computer, which works suprisingly great for games that aren't too reflex intense like racing games. there is just a lot of content out there for this device (and much of that content is completely free). construction is pretty solid, it doesn't feel like cheap plastic and it's already survived a couple of drops on the floor. this version accommodates my galaxy s23 ultra phone even with the case on. the buttons are nice and clicky, if a little stiff and shallow and the joysticks are substantial enough to feel like you have fine directional control. the app is relatively useless, a game launcher isn't really necessary on a mobile platform, but it isn't very intrusive either, it just opens the app if you have it installed when plugged in. bought on prime day for 30% off, but honeslty, even at full price, this thing is pretty compelling. it's essentially a mini-sized steam deck for a fraction of the price. there is a gen 1 and gen 2 if you wanna save a little and get the old version, but i recommend the ps5 gen 2 version if you are on android and you want to use ps5 remote play, as that feature won't work with the standard versions if you're on android.

The Backbone is nearly perfect for what it's designed to do. The controller is comfy, lightweight and the buttons/analogs feel snappy and responsive. It attaches and detaches to the iPhone simply and quickly, and immediately goes to work once attached. I gave this five stars because I am loving it and having a blast, but there are actually a few (very minor) drawbacks: 1. Even with the adapters that come with the Backbone, I have to take my phone out of its case. I'm even using a low-profile Spigen hard case, and the lightning plug just won't reach all the way with the case on. Not a huge setback but a little disappointing. 2. The "Start" and "Select" buttons (ellipsis and stacked lines) are accompanied by an orange system button and a screenshot button on the right and left sides, respectively. If you're doing Xbox Remote Play and you try to pause a game or bring up a menu in-game, you're very likely to hit one of the Backbone buttons (orange or screenshot), which immediately kicks you over to the Backbone app and ends your Remote Play session. I accidentally do this about half the time. It's REALLY annoying. As I get used to the Backbone I am doing this less, so it's really a personal preference thing, but still. I kill my Remote session constantly and have to reconnect while I'm in the heart of the action playing a game. You might be able to re-map these buttons but I haven't gotten that far yet. Overall, I love the product and recommend it. Worth the money and very very fun!

(Review from a hardcore console gamer.) I've tried a few mobile game controllers in the past, and they've all had the same problem: they couldn't fit my big phone with a thick case on it. And I don't have the patience to remove my phone case every time I want to game. So I gave up on the idea altogether. Fast forward a few years, and I really want to take advantage of Xbox Cloud Gaming on my (now even bigger!) phone, so I start researching mobile game controllers again, and come across this beauty. Here are my thoughts after a month of surprisingly heavy usage. Pros: - Fits my huge Galaxy S23 Ultra with a thick case (the Grip from dbrand) PERFECTLY! 🤌 - Small form factor, yet still manages to feel comfortable in your hands (mine are slightly larger-than-average), even during long play sessions; it feels like a slightly smaller Nintendo Switch. - Satisfyingly "clicky" buttons, analog sticks, triggers, and bumpers. The analog sticks are slightly longer than the Switch's Joy-Cons, making these feel better. - Haptic feedback feels really cool (if your game supports it)! - The controller is very light, but doesn't feel cheap. - The app (which isn't required to use the controller) is actually very sleek and handy if you give it a chance. Lots of customization options, including the ability to map touchscreen controls (if you subscribe) for games that don't officially support a controller. - It barely uses your phone's battery. I've literally played for HOURS without seeing any hits to my battery. - Perfect for Game Pass streaming or Xbox remote play. I've actually started using the services even MORE thanks to this controller. - You can charge your phone through an easy-to-access USB-C port on the bottom right of the controller. Cons: - I haven't found any games that support haptic feedback yet, although the majority of my gaming is on Game Pass. - The cooler app features (like the touchscreen control mapping) are locked behind a paywall. - Free users have to dismiss an offer to subscribe to the app EVERY TIME you open it. Mostly just annoying, but still. - If my phone were just half an inch longer, I'd have difficulty fitting it into the controller's brackets. If my next phone is bigger, this may no longer work with it. - This is nit-picking, but I feel like the Menu and Options are buttons are oddly placed, like they're practically on the corners of the controller. However, I quickly got used to their positions after a few minutes of play. - Nit-picking again, but a basic case (sold separately) should be included with the controller since it's so thin and I'd be afraid to throw it in a backpack without any kind of protection. This is THE BEST mobile game controller I've used, and it's really led me to take advantage of and enjoy great gaming sessions from literally anywhere! Highly recommended. 👍
