I have had fire tablets in the past and use a tablet daily for work and personal time. I was hesitant on getting our (almost) 4 year old granddaughter a tablet as I didn't want her spending all her free time inside playing games on the tablet. I love the parental controls which allow me to set limits on screen time, what type of content she can access, and the physical features which protect the pad and screen from damage. As we all know, bumps and drops are inevitable. The unit charges rapidly and is easy to navigate - even for a dinosaur like me. Screen time is dependent upon her behavior and tablet time is a great source of positive reinforcement. Not only that, but as she uses it more she wants to share what she is learning and playing with me. We often work together on letters and learning to read simple words but the system is such that she can move forward on her own if she feels comfortable doing so. Tablet time has also morphed into bonding time for the two of us and has led to many excellent learning opportunities. Even though she is only 4 years old she is learning responsibility in caring for her tablet and treating it as a valuable resource and not just a toy. I thought long and hard before investing in a piece of electronic equipment for a 4 year old though, up to this point, it has been nothing but positive actions and reactions we've seen from her since she first started using it.

I wasn't sure if this would be beyond the capability of my 5-year old grandson, but, I'm old and failed to realize that he was very capable and already computer literate. He opened it at my Christmas gathering, had his Dad activate it (and associate it with his Amazon account), and was deeply engrossed in it within 20 minutes. He has been on it all weekend since getting it on Friday. The games appear to be age-appropriate and he truly loves this device. It is a great alternative to an iPad and is very rugged in its case. I highly recommend this as an excellent pad at an excellent price. Note: You should charge the device, without setting it up, before giving as a gift. If you are giving it to someone who lives in your own household then you can have it 'Associated with your Amazon Account' when you order it. Otherwise, do not associate it with your own Amazon account when ordering. Note: I also ordered a MicroSD card to insert it this device but it is not required. I just know that more memory is good.

It's a standard amazon fire tablet but with a protective case fit for kids and an app that'll switch to kid friendly content. You can download an app to your own phone and control the amount of time they spend on the tablet which I find amazing. Plus the ease of not having to worry about replacing it when it's broken due to Amazon's return policy for these. Definitely worth the price.

I absolutely love Amazon kid tablets. They are easy to use, have the best battery life. They have parental controls that are easily set up. The screen quality is wonderful and this tablet doesn’t lag like other tablets owned in the past. I got my tablet on sale, but would pay the full price for the functionality, speed and battery life of this tablet. It’s even easily for my 3 year old to use.

I have one and my kids use. Our kids have been using, primarily, our hand me down, old iPads. Going from an Apple iPad to a Fire tablet, you might find challenging and aggravating. The apps and features aren't a one-to-one match. For example, YouTube kids, unless you do some side loading workarounds, it's not on there. There is a lot of control and monitoring capabilities for the parents; however, when kids need app installes with permissions, it's hard to find the request for permissions. I'm keeping it and continuing to learn how to use it better. We are all fluid with iPads, so the kids have trouble learning too. Guess the bottom line, it's no where near as intuitive as Apple devices and from the kids perspectives. Full disclosure, I wanted to break away from Apple, not a super fan, but they make it hard to get off other their ecosystem. For what it's all worth!

Easy to use and set time limits. We now have 3 of them and they're great for all my kids. Even my 8 year old still uses hers, a lot. We mostly use it in the car and not for home use. Hooks up great to my phone's hot spot so they can do more than just their downloads.

Very annoyed that I couldn't simply hide the apps I don't want. It seems this is designed to present options with a message to children so they beg their parents to turn these features on (and in the case of specific apps and the app store in general, spend money). Returned it for this reason. The Amazon kids subscription includes a ton of apps that look like quick cash-grabs or content for contents sake, nothing that screams triple-A quality. It might suffice to keep your kids entertained (you might be aiming for quiet; how loud they will be in the back of the car likely depends on the kid), but it's not a substitute for actual parenting. Now, if Amazon sold these with plain Android or at least gave you full control over the device, there would be really good value for your money. The case is nice. I'd like to test it's durability in a shop environment. In that use case, it could be a very functional budget Android tablet.

We got the 7inch one and had low expectations, the durability Is incredible and the processing system is ok for a kid. This one and the 7 inch both survived an accidental pool immersion, they still work perfectly fine.
