After being truly inspired by a bunch of diy food blogs I had the opportunity of reading last month, I felt ready to take on more DIY projects, and really amp up my pantry storage. With this, I decided to start by making my own cheeses. So, what did I need to start my fromagerie? I bought this 1 X Organic Liquid Vegetable Rennet, 2oz., Citric Acid Powder - Ultra Fine Pure Powdered Crystals - Natural Preservative Food Grade Quality (16 oz) , and our Regency Cheesecloth here. After following the instructions very carefully, I…failed. I actually didn’t follow the instructions carefully, I completely made a misstep in the amount of both rennet and citric acid that I was supposed to put in, resulting in a goopy mess. I tried again, this time basically writing the instruction on my hands so that I wouldn’t mess up, and wouldn’t you know it—it came out pretty damn great! I can’t believe that not only was it edible, it also tasted really good. It was amazing. I started with ricotta, but feeling confident from my first cheese I then moved on to mozzarella. Success! I can’t believe it, but I did it, and the cheesecloth worked perfectly well. Now, I’ll be honest dear Amazon readers, I’m actually not going to be open a fromagerie so now I have all of these tools to make cheese, but little passion for the making itself. That said, I found other uses for my products. Well, kind of. The rennet: no chance, I haven’t found any use for it, someone please comment on this post and give me a use for it. The cheesecloth: so many cooking things. Anytime I need to take some of the liquid out of something, I use my cheesecloth. Basically, for any kind of filter you could need in the kitchen, my cheesecloth works as it. Now, the piece de resistance; the citric acid. The citric acid has so many uses that, finding more uses is actually becoming one of my obsessions. I (will) use it for preserves, I use it for my fruit salads, I (will one day) use it for making bath bombs, I even am going to try to clean my dishwasher with it this weekend. The brand is pretty good for the cheesemaking, as it leaves it with a really clean taste, as opposed to another brand my friend tried that she said gave it a funny aftertaste. Okay, gigantic monologue over, I recommend all of these products, and I hope you enjoy making ze cheese!

I recently started the paleo diet in hopes to jump start some weight loss and help with inflammation. A friend is doing the same and highly suggested I purchased one of these to help makes things that go into this diet. My first attempt at using this was to make cauliflower mash. It's really easy to do you pop some cauliflower in the blender, add a little water to help it mash, and blend until smooth. You remove it from the blender and stick the mix onto the cheese cloth. You roll it up making sure no ends are open or you will lose your mash and you squeeze it over the sink or into a bowl. This helps keep your mash together and remove any excess liquid in it. The cheese cloth is HUGE (about 15"x32") so it makes it so easy to use! The fine grits of the mash did not get through and I was left with a nice mash. I fried it with a little coconut oil seasoning and it was done. I plan on trying to use this to make cauliflower rice as well. I washed it by placing it in a mesh garment bag and throwing it in with my dish towels. It's very fine so while it may not be instructed to do this I would recommend it to keep the cloth nice! Definitely recommend this! Prior to this purchase I never even heard of one and now I need more :)

Arriving promptly, I anticipated straining fruit immediately. I was disappointed it won't work. It's not wide enough and he weave is poor. It's cheesecloth. I expected some roughness but not as sloppy as this was. Adding to that, it being only 18" wide, I was a bit disappointed. I will use this for straining paint now instead of food as it is much too coarse for what I need. I take half the blame for my disappointment as I neglected to verify item particulars first. It states 45 square feet and without measuring, I'm fairly certain it is. I simply expected a sort of squarish product. A roughly 6' x 7' item, not a 1.5' x 30'. My fault for not double-checking. On the plus side, the pack arrived promptly and the price was reasonable for what was delivered. If you're looking for simple cheesecloth and don't require a wider area of coverage as I did, you should check this out. The seller provided what was advertised. My rating was for the width and the fraying. For the price, I'll just use it elsewhere.

I've used my Regency Natural cheesecloth for over 5 years now as a cover to my kombucha brewing vessel to allow it to breath while keeping out dust, large particles and opportunistic pests. While my use case isn't what I'd consider intensive to truly test it's durability, I have put it through the washing machine multiple times in a washing bag and it's come out just fine every time without issue. I feel confident it would work just fine for a number of filter and straining applications over and above mine.
