I wanted this camera to install at our front door to watch the front porch, sidewalk and driveway without having to run power wire to the placement. I had this camera up and running very quickly, connected to my wifi and the Tapo app, and the mount installed near the front door with one screw inside 1 hour. We've had it up for a little over a month and it's working great for us. Both the wife and I have the app on our phones and ipads, and we both have set it for alerts when there is "motion" or a "person" detected. There is also a setting for "pet alert" but the motion works for alerting that our dogs are at the door. The picture is very clear, day or night, and the memory (with our own memory card added) works well so we can see who/want has been at our door or sidewalk. I did block out the street so we don't get an alert for every car that drive by. We've had it up about a month and use it a lot and the battery is at 71% so I'd guess we'll need to take it in to charge about every 3 months, but we use our front door a lot and view it a lot so we are draining the battery quicker than if it was used less. In the spring I will add another to our back porch so we can watch the dogs out back and anyone on our back patio. Highly recommended! I won't hesitate to recommend this camera to friends.

Camera setup was easy and has some nice features like an option to use WiFi or Ethernet, geofencing, being able to alert you to specific occurrences such as a car detected, person detected, animal detected, and if someone crosses a defined area or line. It has an alarm, although not very loud but enough to let someone near it know they’re being recorded. There are also 2 LED lights for recording, but it’s not something that will light up anything (like the ground), even when set to 100% brightness, but is intended to enhance the video quality. I turned it off so it’s not obvious when it detects motion and is actively recording. You can also turn off the LED status light so it doesn’t call attention to it as much. The thing I don’t like is that the inside of the lens sometimes “fogs up”, even when mounted indoors, making it impossible to identify anything. It tends to clear up if I turn the camera off for a few minutes. Other times, in daylight when the lens isn’t foggy, the video isn’t bad. I have concerns it will get extra foggy should it be humid, cold, or raining. Overall it has nice features, but poor video (or perhaps this one is defective). I set the video resolution to the max of 2K and also tried HDR mode for increased clarity, so this was as good as it gets. Even at that, after dark with outside lights on, it’s impossible to identify someone 7’ below where the camera is mounted. UPDATE: The video has been clear after that first day or so. I’m thinking some moisture had gotten in and it just had to burn off in the sun. I added another photo of someone about 25’ out with a leaf blower, and the quality is pretty good. I would definitely recommend.

Since the first moment I installed this camera I was blown away. I have had plenty of experience with other low cost cameras, namely Wyze and then Eufy, but I believe Tapo is far superior in several aspects. It packs a lot of features that only more expensive cams offer. The picture quality both during the day and night is great, and the volume is quite adequate. It is packed with many features, but I will mention what was more important to me in particular. For my needs I preferred a wired camera able to record 24/7 and with no subscription required. The presence of an ethernet port was an unexpected surprise for a camera at this price point. When it comes to the “No Subscription Required” Tapo includes many features that other cameras do not. For example, if you want to be alerted when a person is detected, Tapo will do it for free, but other “no-subscription required” cameras will tell you that for that feature you DO need a subscription. For the amount of features offered as a “No Subscription Required” camera buying a Tapo camera was a no brainer. Also, keep in mind that this model will accept a micro SD card up to 512GB so you will be able to save a lot of footage if you are recording 24/7 like me. After using the apps from Eufy, Wyze and Tapo, I feel more comfortable with the Tapo app. It is more streamlined and clean, and also it is not constantly marketing other products with annoying in app ads. Another huge advantage is that Tapo cameras are better integrated with Google Assistant. If you have tried Eufy cameras you know you cannot cast the stream to Google devices. This Tapo camera is the first one where I have been able to use a voice command to flawlessly cast the camera stream to Chromecast, Google Nest, and other TVs that run the Google environment. When it comes to warranty, I have been burned too many times by Wyze and Eufy when it comes to their customer service and backing up their products. Although I have never contacted Tapo, it gives me great peace of mind to know that both Tapo and Kasa cameras are part of a reputable company like TP-Link. After buying this Tapo camera I have decided to eventually switch all my cameras and run under their ecosystem. My only regret is not having tried them earlier. I would conclude that Tapo is a budget friendly camera from a reputable brand that offers excellent quality and it is well integrated with Google Assistant. On the other hand, Eufy and Wyze offer cheap cameras at not so cheap prices, the kind of products that are marketed on the Tik Tok marketplace to the uninformed.

I came here to buy this after it was ranked first in a New York Times review of security cameras. Not only did it finish first it was also the cheapest. This camera replaces a previous cheap model that has since disappeared from Amazon. That experience was maddening. Flakey and limited software, intermittent WIFI signal, constant false notifications. This camera is mounted in the same spot and connected to the WIFI instantly. The software is simple and intuitive to use. The speaker is a little poor quality but I'm using it as driveway surveillance and have no plans on using the speaker. The image is very clear and downloads are simple and flawless. I have yet to figure out how to delete files on the SD card but with a 64 GB card I had kicking around and installed, I really don't need to worry about. The Activity and Privacy Zones (areas to watch and areas to ignore) work great. I'm able to cut out the front street traffic and identify only movement in the yard and driveway. The microphone is very sensitive. What a wonderful package for such a good price. I'll likely buy a couple of their solar units for mounting high on trees to watch all my good neighbours out walking their dogs...and the rare punk looking for Ford pickups to steal. One quick picky thing for the manufacturer. Please don't tighten the screws to the SD card door so tight. It was a struggle to remove even with the perfect sized Phillips screwdriver. Other than that, great product!
