TL;DR - Please skip to ‘Pros and Cons’ if you only want the details. Let me start by saying that I spent almost two months searching for the perfect dash cam solution for my car. We recently had our first child, and I was determined in every way to make sure that she is as safe as she can be whenever we are on the roadways. Twice a week, I also have to commute 70 miles each way, which is about 90% interstate, and 10% city driving. After encountering two road rage incidents on the same day, I finally decided had enough. If something goes down, I want proof of the person(s) at fault. I’ve likely read every review and studied every device that Amazon sells, including Wolfbox and Pormido. I eventually ended up on r/dashcam on Reddit, which is where I finally struck gold. Reddit always cuts through the noise for me, and this time was no different. The overwhelming choice there for brand is Viofo. They claim that Viofo dash cams excel in every way, and so far, that has been my experience. Installation: The install is about as straightforward as it gets. You need to run the wire to any cameras that you want, except for the main camera, which is built into the main unit. If you only want a single camera facing ahead, there is no wiring necessary, unless you plan on hardwiring the unit to your car’s 12V system. If you intend to utilize ‘Parking Mode’, you will need to have access to both a constant +12V and an accessory +12V, and a ground/earth. I opted for the latter, as I would like my car to be under surveillance at all times. If you opt for only ‘Driving Mode’, it will be an even simpler install, but that will not allow you to record while away from the vehicle. I planned out my route for the rear camera, and ran the single USB-C to USB-C cable, using the provided trim tool. It is very simple in most cases to tuck the wire away behind the vehicle’s interior trim paneling. The tool, although I have my own, was actually very good quality. Setup: Again, it was entirely straightforward. You power it on, go through basic setup for language choice and whatnot, and then you’ll want to enable WiFi so that you can use your phone and the Viofo app to configure the rest of the settings. This *can* be done using the physical buttons on the device, but it is MUCH easier to do on the app. There are so many wonderful options, that using the device’s GUI, although well developed, would be too much to do on a small LCD screen. Take my advice and use the Viofo App. It’s available for iOS and Android. You’ll also want to large Micro SD card to store your recordings. I started with a 16GB Samsung that I already had, but even at normal quality and bitrate settings, it filled up at just 2 hours of recording. This device does have ‘Loop Recording’, but I didn’t choose to enable it. I am fine with deleting the recordings as it fills, as I would rather be sure to have the footage if I discover later that I captured an incident that I didn’t notice right away. Loop Recordings are limited to 10 minutes in length, and that just isn’t enough for me. After operating to the 256GB memory card, I was then able to increase the quality and bitrate setting to the maximum of 2K for the front and rear cameras, and still have plenty of space. I can record about 12 hours without having to delete anything. Image Quality: I immediately tested this device at night by driving around my city and county at 11PM. I wanted to try to capture license plates because, whenever I’m driving, I always have to try to memorize the license plate if something happens, and that is not always possible. When I returned home and checked the footage, I discovered that the STARVIS 2 lenses actually made the possible at night! If you capture a license plate of any car within 10’ or so of yours, you will be able to read the plates using the video footage. Of course, with the audio recording, if you can read it aloud, it will capture your voice in the recording. I am now in the habit of reading the plates aloud for that exact purpose. There was minimal to no glare from either camera, although I do think that I will be ordering the additional lenses for my front camera, as I have a very bright display in the car that is very visible in the recordings. I suppose that is the price you pay for having exceptional Sony Starvis 2 lenses- you WILL capture EVERYTHING. As far as just overall video quality, the 2K and 1080P quality images are exactly as they should be, which is crisp and free of imperfection. These Sony Starvis 2 lenses are something you just have to experience for yourself to understand. Knowing what I know now, I would never use a dash camera without them. Temperatures: The one thing I was most concerned about when I started researching these devices was the sheer amount of failure from the elements. The device you choose will be subjected to extreme heat and cold, and the device you choose absolutely MUST have protections in place for this. Luckily, Viofo planned for this and they use special capacitors and other electrical components inside to ensure that your device doesn’t fail as a result of direct sunlight, freezing and condensation, and overall interior and exterior cabin temps. This was actually my biggest factor in deciding on which brand to choose from. The fact that Viofo not only considered this, but placed extra special care and attention to it, was the ultimate deciding factor for me purchase it. I have already connected with their customer service, and they have been extremely helpful in answering all my questions. I haven’t had any issues, but I wanted to reach out to be sure that I could contact someone if I needed to. Value for money: I actually waited until a Flash Sale to purchase my A229 Plus, and I managed to catch it for $169! I have literally never made a faster and more urgent purchase! You will not find ANYTHING with this kind of quality and features for that price. If you can, wait for a sale and pounce! 🐅 I have tested all the modes and everything works exactly as it should. If you have any questions about it, I would be happy to answer them. I will be monitoring this item for questions for the next couple of months or so, so if you just use Amazon’s product questions feature, I’ll see it and respond. I will also be updating this review every 3 months just to ensure that it’s working properly, and will include and issues and incidents that I encounter. PROS: • Price • Exceptional image quality • Night vision is amazing • Features • Ease of install • Durability Cons: • Doesn’t include a hardwire kit or SD Card

I got the VIOFO A229 Plus with the front and rear camera after doing a lot of research on the topic. I live in a hot area and needed to minimize any potential heat issues, so I opted for the A220 Plus over the Pro thinking that it'll run cooler due to the 2K resolution requiring less CPU to process the video. I've been using the unit for about 3 weeks now and the 2K video is very sharp with good color, contrast and detail. I have it on 30 fps with the HDR to get the best lighting results in day and night time driving and the videos look really good on my laptop when I transfer the files over. The installation for the front camera was very straight forward and fast. I installed it behind my rearview mirror on the drivers side using the supplied windshield static stickers provided in the kit. Running the wires under my A pillar and under the dash to get it over to my console for power took the longest time for the install as I was very picky about how the cable was routed. This was installed in a mid-sized pickup truck so the cable was long enough to reach from the top center of the front windshield all the way to the cigarette lighter power adapter in my center console storage box. The unit blends in with the black rearview mirror so you don't notice the camera too much from the outside. I contacted VIOFO with a question before purchasing and their support team got back to me the next day. I asked if you can remove the dashcam from the GPS mount in case I needed to hide it if the car was parked in a sketchy location - to prevent theft. The support rep answered my question and also forwarded me two videos on how to remove and attach the unit, so I was glad to see how it all worked and how fast they responded to my questions. Good pre-sales support! For the rear camera, I spent more time deciding where to put the camera than doing the installation itself. Ultimately, I stuck it to the rear cab driver side window section and ran the cable down the side of the driver headliner molding. VIOFO supplies a lot of cable for the rear camera so I tucked a lot of it in the B and C pillars to hide everything. I have a very dark tinted rear window and the video from the rear camera with HDR enabled came out great. The full sun, cloudy day and night time videos all have good contrast and color with pretty sharp detail even through the dark tinted window. I purchased a 256GB SD card to make sure I can do continuous loop recording for several weeks or more before overwriting. It recognized my SanDisk High Endurance SD card without issues and formatted it quickly for first time use. I tested the feature to protect the video and took multiple still pictures with the camera. Everything worked well. The user manual provided covered everything from set up to initial power up and configuration of the unit and the two camera's video functions. I'll set up the WiFi and VIOFO app next to give that a try, but configuring from the unit itself using the menu buttons wasn't all that hard to do and you can also review all of the recorded pictures and videos on the unit without the phone app too. Overall, I'm really happy with the purchase and it's working out well. I've used other dash cams in the past that mounted on the rearview mirror (replacing it) and wasn't all that thrilled with the mirror function if I had to turn off the dash cam's rear camera for any reason. So the VIOFO is a definite improvement over that type of dash cam for my use case. Update: 1/4/2025 I got a chance to download the VIOFO app and test the WiFi for the configuration, video review, and download functions today. If you read the lower rated reviews on the app, a lot of it has to do with spotty connectivity and unreliable downloads. I'm a pretty technical network engineer and what others have said on this topic in the reviews are true. There are a lot of things in the car and how your smart phone is configured for WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity that will affect the reliability of the WiFi connection to the VIOFO dashcam. If I leave all of my truck's connectivity configurations at the default enabled WiFi and bluetooth settings that I normally have enabled, my connectivity to the VIOFO dash cam using the VIOFO app kept dropping and bouncing up and down. If I turn off my phone and car's bluetooth, turn off the car's WiFi hot spot, turn off my phone's auto connect to my home WiFi SSID (to force everything to the VIOFO WiFi) and tell the Android phone to stay connected even though it doesn't have internet access, the connection is solid and very stable. I changed the VIOFO's default WiFi password to secure it from the default values and that bounced the VIOFO WiFi (as expected because the password changed) and I had to reconnect to it using the new password. After I played around with all the settings and learned how to get a solid stable connection, I played around with all of the configuration settings on the VIOFO app and they worked as expected. The file recording review feature was good and I turned the audio recording on and off to test if it recorded the radio that was playing in the background and it did. The file download of a 190 MB file to my phone was pretty quick too - less than 15 seconds. So, if you learn how to disable and enable the necessary connectivity options between your car, phone, and VIOFO dashcam, you should be able to get a solid and stable connection. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase and all of the features the A229 Plus provides for what I paid. Hope this review helps you out.

Setup is relatively easy enough, and they provide you with all you need to install the cameras and hide the wires. Please note that you may need the 8M or 10M rear camera cord instead, which is sold separately for around $20. The user guide will walk you through everything. If you connect your phone to the dash cam using the wifi, the app is really simple to use and you can adjust a ton of the settings from video resolution to video length, etc. It is also easier to view and download the videos to your phone. I have been using the camera for a week or so, and the voice command works as intended; and, as far as I can tell, the g-sensor works... A strong wind blew/shook my car the other day, and the camera locked the video thinking something happened. The parking features are a pretty nice touch, but you will probably need extra hardware for that.

Picked up during blk Fri deals. Installed 1 ea for both my cars (a229+/2 ch). Install was simple with hk4 hardwire kit; directions were easy to understand. Wifi to dashcam app (android) was flawless. The list of settings is long; checked various forums for recommendations and seem to fit my needs. Video quality is awesome (cpl lens filter is a must imo as it clarifies the pic). Voice commands is 80/20 where sometimes I need to repeat the command but it's a nice hands-free option especially while driving. Installed the BT button for 1-tap actions; immediate connection (programmable under settings mode). Will have to see how it holds up during summer months but the option to slide off the mount is useful so it won't bake in the sun. Overall, impressed with the thoughts that went into the design and functionality.

VIOFO’s dashcams are very good. It has strong image quality during the day and expected performance at night. It is intuitive to use and the feature set is good. You don’t need an anymore premium version than this.
